Chickaloon is a historic mining town, built during World War II to supply coal to Navy ships. Today, the town is a quiet beautiful highway stop next to the Matanuska River and between two mountain ranges. Many tourists enjoy the spectacular scenery and peacefulness. There is a whitewater rafting company, a horseback trail ride company, the town's general store and a cafe.

Chickaloon is located on the Chickaloon River, on the Glenn Highway, 26 miles northeast of Palmer in the Talkeetna Mountains. It lies at approximately 61d 47m N Latitude, 148d 28m W Longitude (Sec. 25, T2N, R5E, Seward Meridian). The community is located in the Palmer Recording District. The area encompasses 47 sq. miles of land and 1 sq. miles of water.
