Big Lake

Big Lake is named for the lake that it is located on. The US Geological survey named the lake in 1958, and the simple but descriptive name lasted. The beautiful city is nestled in the Chugach mountains, and serves as a vacation spot for many Anchorage and Mat-Su Valley residents. Most Big Lake residents commute to Anchorage or the Palmer/Wasilla area to work, but the many lodges on the lake give residents local employment opportunities as well. Unemployment is very low.

Boating and fishing are very popular in the summer on Big Lake. The area has a very mild and pleasant climate, with winter temperatures rarely dropping below zero. Summer temperatures vary from 5-75 degrees. With so much to do, it's easy to see why Big lake is known as "Alaska's Year-Round Playground."
