Cantwell is located in the beautiful and scenic area just south of Denali State Park. Cantwell is named after the Nenana River, which was originally called the Cantwell River. It began as a flag stop on the Alaska Railroad, which still provides train service for that area. The climate can be described as long, cold winters and comparatively warm summers.

The small village economy revolves around transportation and highway tourism . Others find employment in construction and other seasonal industries. Most Native residents also depend on fishing, subsistence hunting, gathering and trapping. There is one school located in the community. There is also one health clinic.
